There is no denying that, in 2025, there is a lot of World of Warcraft content. You could even be forgiven, I think, for being overwhelmed by just the Blizzard Launcher. The first decision, before you even open a game, is which version of WoW you even feel like playing. There’s the retail version (The War Within), Classic Cata (soon-to-be MoP), and Classic (Vanilla). Even then there are sub-decisions for Classic (Vanilla). Do you feel like playing Season of Discovery, on an Anniversary Realm, or on a regular Realm? Hardcore gaming or the forgiving type? I have characters on all of these and most of them barely get played. I just don’t have the time to spread myself that thin.
Most of my gaming happens in retail (The War Within), so let’s narrow it down to that for the rest of this post. In this expansion I can level alts and level professions, which is a grind more intensive and involved than most previous profession grinds. It’s also potentially high on the list if I want to be in a good position to make housing items once player housing is available.
I can kill two World Bosses, complete four original outdoor events, participate in the Hallowfall fishing derby, and complete Nightfall (the new outdoor event in Hallowfall). I could run dungeons and/or raids, but I can also run Delves. Speaking of Delves, do I want to run overcharged or not overcharged delves? Do I want to focus only on Bountiful Delves, or am I more focused on grinding out delving achievements?
Then there’s the Undermine content and all the events and quests that pop up daily and weekly there. You can tell I haven’t prioritized this content because I know barely anything about it.
Relatively new, there’s Dastardly Duos and the return of Horrific Visions. Currently there’s Turbulent Timeways as well, which is great for the leveling of alts and yields a kind of awesome mount I really want. Actually, thinking about the mount makes remember collecting.
I could double down on pet battling and really increase my pet collection, but I could also work on mount farming. Of course there’s also running old content for transmog, pets, mounts, and toys. Then there’s also achievement hunting, grinding, whatever you want to call it. The amount of cool things I don’t have in game is almost worthy of tears. Not actually, I’m being dramatic.
My point though is that the addition of even more things to do in every patch is almost a mind boggling idea. There’s so much to do in the game and they want to add even more? I seriously do not have the time for all of this.
Honestly, probably no one else does either. That’s likely to be ok for those players who specialize. Anyone who only raids and does Mythic+ is possibly more ok not doing pet battles. I imagine most of the top tier PvP players might only do mount collecting, or some other non-PvP aspect of the game, as a hobby in their spare time.
So, possibly my main issue, is that I like playing the game. I occasionally like PvP (can Comp Stomp be considered PvP?). I’m a casual collector. I like leveling alts and seeing alternate or additional storylines (I’m looking at you Legion Class Hall Questlines.). I find the idea of creating a professions alt army to be an appealing one. I also want my main characters (a hunter and a druid) to be decently geared so it’s easier to farm not-super-old content like Shadowlands raids and Dragonflight dungeons.
With the pace of content, it’s hard to believe I’ll ever really feel like I’m on top of things in WoW, especially once the school year starts up (I’m a teacher). That said, I don’t really need to be on top of everything. I just need to log in and have fun doing whatever I feel like doing in the moment.
I’m curious as to what others think about the amount and pacing of content. Is it too much to do kind of all at once? Or are you ok with the amount? Feel free to let me know in a comment!
