First of all, I want to acknowledge the obvious.  As a writer of a blog about playing World of Warcraft as a mostly solo player, I am obviously biased.  You already know I’m going to say it’s not wrong to play this way.  If you disagree with me and have actual reasons for it feel free to leave a comment.  I’m up for any kind of discussion.  If you have no actual reasons (and no, telling me that I’m not a “real player” is not a reason – it’s an opinion) then kindly do not comment.  You will be ignored, at least by me, as I do not engage with opinions that are not backed up by thought and reasons.  There’s no discussion to be had there, you’re always going to think I’m wrong and I’m always going to disagree with that unless you have reasons to convince me otherwise.

Still here?  Awesome, let’s keep going.

One of the nice things about playing WoW solo is that you hardly ever encounter anyone in a social manner so their opinion has no real impact on you.  Even if you read the forums (side note: I have a bachelor’s degree in Classics, took Latin in college, and it bothers me like crazy that the accepted English plural of forum is not fora.  Anyway . . .) know that those who feel that you are playing the game incorrectly primarily just can’t comprehend thinking about the game in the same way that you do.  It’s too different from their point of view.  My advice when reading comments and the forums is to simply shrug and move on.  You’re playing a different way.  Different is not inherently wrong.

Next up on my list of reasons is simply that this is a game.  If playing board games with my two nephews has taught me anything it’s that the rules can be bent, reinterpreted, and even dropped entirely if all those that are affected by these changes agree to them.  I believe the term is “house rules.”  From here it’s simple, you are in your house (or apartment, or condo, or wherever else) and your house rules only affect you.  People who are not affected by your house rules have no real voice in defining them for you.  It’s a game, you should play it in a way that you enjoy.

Finally, this brings me to what I’ve decided is my last point (I could go on, I promise, but I won’t.).  The developers had added, adapted, and evolved the game to make it more friendly to solo and solo-ish players.  If you weren’t supposed to play that way they wouldn’t have adapted the game to allow for that playstyle.  That isn’t to say the group content has disappeared.  Raids, group finder, Mythic+, and PvP are all still in the game.  Only now, instead of spending my end game flying around looking at the pretty scenery (I spent most of my level 70 Burning Crusade experience in Nagrand on the floating islands.), there’s end game content that can be completed without having to find a group and deal with, potentially toxic and rude, players.

Despite my somewhat abrupt and in your face warning of my first paragraph, I don’t expect everyone to agree with my opinions.  Just as I have chosen to play the game solo-ish, others have gone to either completely solo or completely group play styles.  WoW is a spectrum of play styles and so I will echo here one of my earlier reasons.  Your house rules, so long as they are agreed upon by all who are affected by them, are fine.  Play the game you want to play as, after all, it’s only a game.
